There are a lot of very compelling email opt-in offers out there. There are a lot that are … less so. Your objective, as the owner of an email list, is to create something so useful, so value-adding, that it delights the reader and sparks a relationship. How could you pay it forward and make someone’s day?

Instead of sending me a 10% off coupon, send me:

  • A worksheet that helps me prepare for my appointment or consultation. (Include a FAQ section that makes me feel prepared and confident.)
  • A how-to guide with real statistics backed by scientific or academic sources.
  • An email you write, unique to me, thanking me for signing up for your newsletter. Don’t send it from your email marketing software — use your actual email client. (This seems like an especially compelling tactic for anyone who sells an expensive product.)
  • A neatly-formatted list of your favorite resources, with a three-sentence summary of each and a hyperlink that lets me vet each of them quickly.
  • A secret URL to a place I can buy your e-book—in print—for the cost of shipping and handling. (If your e-book isn’t good enough to print, it’s probably not a compelling free offer.)
  • A link to a single, very funny Youtube video. It doesn’t have to be yours.

A great email list — one that increases the size, frequency, and conversion rate of every sale — is built by making and keeping promises. Don’t trick people into subscribing. Invite (and delight) them.
